Vukukhanye
Vukukhanye’s objectives include five broad project areas; which are briefly described below:
1. HIV/AIDS - Prevention, Training & Care.
The prevention of HIV infection; as well as the provision of prevention and education programmes aimed at facilitating the empowerment and improved quality of life of people living with HIV/AIDS. The care, counselling and treatment of persons affected/ infected by HIV/AIDS; which includes promoting care for inmates of correctional facilities.
2. Orphans & Vulnerable Children.
The care of abandoned, abused, neglected, orphaned or homeless children; or any other vulnerable or needy children, including those affected or infected by HIV/AIDS. This includes the provision of transitional and/or long-term residential care (children’s foster homes), supportive reintegration with families/caregivers and follow-up support for children and caregivers. In cooperation with social welfare, community and other relevant organisations; Vukukhanye aims to promote family stability and improve the social environment of children within its area of operation.
3. Early Childhood Development.
Facilitating the provision of quality early childhood education in underserved, poorly resourced communities; through the support and development of preschools and crèches, including the training of staff and the provision of improved resources and facilities.
4. Bursary Project.
The aim of the Bursary project is to contribute towards the ability of disadvantaged individuals from Chesterville Secondary Schools to achieve tertiary educational qualifications; by providing an incentive for high school achievement and by providing the necessary financial support, as well as mentoring and associated support, to deserving individuals.
5.School Partnership Programme.
The aim of this programme is to facilitate the transformation of Chesterville schools into models of excellence, by instilling a clear vision, code of ethics, sound governance, skilled and inspiring educators, a disciplined and motivated learner body who take pride in their school and a school facility that is well equipped and conducive to providing quality education. Vukukhanye is at this stage focusing on Chesterville Secondary School.
6. After-School Sport (‘Sport For All’ social franchise model).
The overall aim of this project is to contribute to youth development, crime prevention and the development of sporting talent within the school-going youth of Chesterville.The project provides a trusted, safe environment for children after school. Over 300 children are registered and are attending daily sports coaching.
7. 'One-Stop Centre'.
The primary aim of this project is to provide a 'victim-friendly' facility, along with appropriately trained staff and volunteers, which will serve the social needs of the community of Chesterville, with a particular focus on: Rape Domestic violence Child abuse HIV/AIDS, TB & other diseases Orphans and vulnerable children Vulnerable families
8. Street Committees.
The aim of the street committee project is the re-establishment of operational Street Committees in Chesterville with the primary objective being to involve the community of a particular area in creating a peaceful and productive environment by encouraging community members to take a greater interest in, and responsibility for their community.
