Providing primary healthcare services, early childhood and youth development programmes, and support services for vulnerable children and adults. MaAfrika Tikkun is an international organisation with branches in Cape Town, Johannesburg, England and Australia. Tikkun means to correct or repair in Hebrew and encapsulates the mission of MaAfrika Tikkun, to uplift and empower disadvantaged communities in South Africa to deal with their problems effectively and in a sustainable way. MaAfrika Tikkun Cape Town is active in the areas of Delft and Mfuleni. All of these areas suffer from high levels of unemployment and resulting poverty. The goals and objectives for the project are to make a meaningful difference by caring for the vulnerable children and youth, as well as caring for those who impact the lives of these vulnerable children. This done through a set of core services: Child and Family Services (child and family services, early childhood development programmes, community care, development programmes); Primary Health Care (integrated management of childhood illness, patient advocacy, home-based care, school health, employment assistance programme); and Support Services (feeding and nutrition, transport, reaction and distribution) The focus of the Western Cape programmes is on strong leadership for the future through informal education programmes in schools as well as catalysing community development projects and programmes. The organisation works in partnership with government to develop neighbourhood community centres into functional hubs for learning, skills development and safe recreation. Nelson Mandela is the Patron-in-Chief of this organisation. BikeTown Africa has provided the organisation with 106 bicycles so that health care workers, particularly those involved in HIV/AIDS related work, will be able to see more patients each day and save as many lives as possible. The Angel’s programme links sponsors to families who then receive daily meals, food parcels once a month, care and support from caregivers, shack renovation, school uniforms and psychosocial support. The sponsors receive biannual reports on the families, often establishing a deeper than monetary bond. MaAfrika Tikkun has an online gifting site: http://gifts.maafrikatikkun.org.za When one buys something through this site, a donation goes straight to supporting shack building or shack renovation and impoverished families' basic needs, like a roof over their heads, a basin or even an outside toilet. A shopper may request an email to be sent to the person from whom the gift is made, advising them of the purchase on their behalf.
